I use Soluto on two 64bit Win7 machines with lots of memory. It works fine but Autoruns is still needed to "adjust" stubborn programs that Soluto does not seem to control. I also have several WinXP machines which had a *lot* of problems with Soluto, and the program had o be removed. I agree with your assessment on Soluto, but keep a backup handy.

And still...

Microsoft Windows is INCREASING in price. Microsoft software is INCREASING in price. Microsoft XBox and most games are INCREASING in price. Gas prices go up. The housing bubble continues to decimate families and communities. Banks still won't lend money. All while Mister Bill and friends get to play Batman to the third world. (I want to puke!)

Don't get me wrong! It's good what Mister Bill is doing. But don't you think that with all that EXTRA MONEY that Mister Bill has that he could maybe help the very country that helped him to become the philanthropist that he is - ALSO? Do you think Mister Bill could maybe help DECREASE PRICES at least with respect to Microsoft products so that maybe a few more people could AFFORD TO EAT and lookf for a job online?! NOT just "students" or third world residents either!!! I would think that in hard times like these that Mister Bill might want to help people who are now struggling financially due to circumstances they had no part of. I would think SOMEONE would want to help maybe just a LITTLE. Don't you?!

And I'm not talking about Mister Bill's famous college grants that he gives mostly to minorities either - quite the opposite (keep it up). I'm saying that with money like Mister Bill's there ought to be a way he can help an economic catastrophe that continues to hurt the very country that he is still a citizen of. Therefore, I say "shame" Mister Bill, SHAME! You don't even give away half what you take in and certainly NOT to those who helped you amass your fortune. You don't even CONSIDER dropping prices of your own products. In fact, you increase them just so you can play Batman! Therefore I say SHAME! (Or should I say, STUPID!?)

I can't believe they're doing this. I bought into the whole stupid ecosphere buying a Thinkpad with Windows Vista, then a year later shelling out money to buy what Vista should have been, Windows 7. I had two rows of gagets on my comiputer. They checked the weather for me (very important in Canada), they tracked pacakages for me, my facebook feed, they kept track of my ebay transactions and provided me a quick lookup of how to pronouse a word and it's definition. They were incredibly useful especially to a home business user but also to everyone who really, really hates the system tray. I love how on the gadgets download page they say that they've discontinued support for gadgets so that they can focus on great features for the current opperating system. I just paid you guys for the latest opperatiing system right after it came out. Microsoft needs to remember who their customers are before they loose them all. I wouldn't mind.

Why does everyone seem to think that MSCONFIG is a configuration utility when even Microsoft says it's a troubleshooting utility?

NO ONE SHOULD EVER USE MSCONFIG AS A PERMANENT FIX!!!

Even utilities like Piriform's CCleaner should not be allowed to "edit" startup files unless those changes are made permanent (ie. either delete the startup entries altogether or re-enable them).

Here's one such scenario why you may want to think twice before using msconfig: Go ahead and install something complex like Symantec's latest antivirus suite. Reboot as suggested and then use msconfig to edit out all of Symantec's startup items from being run at startup. Reboot again. Uninstall the Symantec product and reboot again. Now re-enable msconfig back to "normal" thus re enabling the Symantec entries that you previously edited out. Finally, reboot and watch your computer do some rather annoying things - anything from simple sluggish performance to regularly displaying a BSOD!

MSCONFIG is a very bad idea if you rely on it to permanently fix things. If you don't remember to re-enable msconfig back to normal before uninstalling something then you run the risk of tying Windows up in knots that only a complete re installation can fix. SO DON'T DO IT! DON'T USE MSCONFIG AS A PERMANENT FIX!

Way too many people do this and it's not a whole lot unlike forgetting to replace the spare tire! You may get better performance even. But what do you think is going to happen when that spare tire blows?! Here's a hint: pretty much the same thing your computer is eventually going to do if you keep relying on msconfig as a permanent fix.
