Three of my desktops at home are about six- or eight-year olds. They operate on Windows XPSP3 and I have on average three security software, one paid and two or three others. I have read somewhere online several tips on optimizing computers and by following all the suggested tips I have been able to speed up the way my computers respond whenever I use them.
I live in the Philippines and I noted that a lot of people here just use their computers without realizing the basics. Maybe because companies where most of them started to get to know computers had IT guys telling them not to defrag, clean-up, etc for security and other reasons. You are talking about people who only have user rights and not administrator rights. I was, for a long time, no different from most of them but now I know better. People and friends who have asked me to tweak their computers have noted a significant difference in the way these computers respond after I had done my tweaks.
The greatest wisdom I picked up in the last four years have allowed me to be more confident with software, and even hardware, I can now readily shift from Windows 2000, XP, Vista or 7. I just hope the others continue reading and learning online they could surely benefit from doing these things. I do not need a very fast processor or a very large hard drive knowing fully well I just have simple computing needs.
